We
had a lot of fun and we didn’t have to worry about being killed or
being bewitched. We just had fun with friends and there was a lot of
games to play too.
Life was so simple and easy than we have now. Below are things we love about childhood in the 80’s
1. There Was No Over Spiritualization
Spirituality
has become so much a part of the lives of Ghanaians that even kids have
been
roped in on the trend. Kids are now not allowed to play with even
their own relatives just because their parents have been told that their
family members are witches.
2. Everyone Was Your Friend
Kids
back in the 80’s had friends everywhere. Anybody of your age
bracket was your friend and you could play with him/her without any problem.
They could even come to your house to play and eat and you could also do
same. Life was that simple.
3. There Was Always Something To Play With
Kids
of today will cry because they don’t have toys or video games. In the
80’s, we made toys out of practically everything and we played games we
invented ourselves. From
“discus”, made with Sardine openers, to “alikoto”, made using flattened crown cocks with pen tops inserted in their middle, to kites etc.
4. Less Pollution
There
was not much pollution in our time and that means less medical issues.
There were less cars, less garbage but more trees. The air was much
cleaner and healthier than what we have now.
5. Political Tension Was At A Minimum
Now
it’s even difficult for kids to step out in the evening or alone
because their parents have warned them since it’s an election year and
there is the perception that some political parties will be performing
blood rituals using kids. Such thing didn’t exist back in those days.
6. No Dumsor Wahala
We
didn’t have TV’s in every home but we enjoyed the light. We played at
night and studied under the light. Dumsor was not a word that was even
mentioned in those days because it didn’t exist. We had light almost
every time.
7. School Was Fun
School
back then was much fun than now. Even though we were made to learn, we
also had fun with our free periods which we thought meant free time or
play time. We also used time for PE to play and have fun.
8. There Were Fields For Games In Almost Every Community
It’s
sad how every piece of land within communities have been sold or turned
into a residence. Back in the day, there were fields in most
communities for football or just for kids to play on. We go there to
play with our tin cars, fly our kites, play other games and practically
have fun outside our homes but now things are different.
