One person is reported dead and several others injured in an accident involving workers of the newly inaugurated Komenda Sugar Factory in the Central Region. The workers were returning from sugarcane harvest when the Kia truck [GR 878 -11] they were travelling in overturned on a hill at Apewosika in the Komenda-Edina-Aguafo-Abirem area on Monday at about 7:00pm. One of the 75 workers who were on board the truck died on the spot and 62 others sustained various degree of injuries. The injured were rushed to the Central Regional Hospital where they were treated and discharged The body of the deceased, who is yet to be identified, has been deposited at the hospital’s morgue. A local reporter, John Egyire told Onua FM’s Yen Sempa Tuesday morning that the workers had finished the day’s assignment and were returning to their various destinations when the accident occurred. He said upon reaching the spot, the vehicle began to struggle to climb the hill and caused the vehicle to overturn. A survivor, Adjoa Kwansima who confirmed the accident to the host of Yen Sempa, Kwame Karikari, said the driver was climbing the hill when the truck suddenly reversed before it overturned. She said that they were taken to the hospital and discharged but they have been asked to report to the hospital for further checkups.
